Step up, Roll up, Dress up, Pucker up, Bottoms up…. Three Colts Gallery are proud to present their most daring show to date. ‘The Circus Show’ is a group show inspired by Alexander Calder’s Circus that celebrates the spectacle and the crowd, play and transformation. The show will feature opening night performances, installations, paintings, sculptures - and more! On the opening night the audience will be invited (among other things) to Throw Custard Pies at a Tired Old Clown, Beat up a Traffic Warden with sticks, and win prizes for assaulting masochistic paintings. If that’s not enough they can chuckle at the giant clown’s arse poking through the ceiling and enjoy the musical performances. All the action will be filmed and shown as part of the exhibition. On entering the space you will be offered a carnival mask, confronted by an Elephant Podium that you will be required to manoeuvre around and encounter a field mic designed for hunting interplanetary sounds of endangered or magical nature. You can explore the burnt out dwelling of the clown who has run away from the Circus, and avoid the gigantic squirty flower that he left behind. More voyeuristically there will be an installation documenting the transformative process of a sex change operation and a miniature ‘Backstage at the Circus’ tableaux. You will not be alone in this experience though, for the walls shall bear their own spectators, a cast of characters to include a painted obituary of Sam the Worlds Ugliest Dog, a photo of Tony Blair and a head made entirely from plasticine. Alexander Calder used the circus as a place of fun, joy, motion. It allowed him to push the boundaries of what art could be - through play. The Circus also represents a site of chaos and excess, of mutation and exchange in the spirit of Bakhtinian liberation, of the ‘carnivalesque’. The Circus Show will be an exhibition of the clownish, comedic and grotesque or absurd. It will display the acrobatic and transformative; there will be metamorphoses between human and machine, privileging the crowd over the individual. So come along, we’ll have a gay old time! Happy 2006! - heres my first news for the new year

I did the drawings for the "How to Build a Supergroup" interview with Paul Epworth in Marmalade Magazine

Paul Epworth writes and produces music for bands and musicians as diverse as the Sugababes, Babyshambles, The Streets, the Kills, Bloc Party, Tom Vek and Kano as well as playing with his own band Lomax. He was asked by the magazine to create his ultimate Frankenstein band and I was invited to draw them.

Its available now in good bookshops (the interview is on pages 58 and 59)

Sarah Doyle : Helping You Find The Right Jewellery
This neat-concept, solid artist's book comes in a seal-strip see-thru plastic bag and is accompanied by a wearable, drawn-and-then-laminated pair of large earrings mounted on a vivid green multi-pointed star card (there are different pairs available). Sarah's decorated the front cover with drawings of various hallmarks - a pair of scales, an anchor, a crown, a castle, a cat and more. Genuine teenagers selected their fave jewellery items from Argos and Index catalogues, then Sarah (whose work's been published in Arty) depicted their choices and hand-outline-lettered the descriptions, serial numbers and prices. In addition, she made single-page illustrations of some of the celebs responsible for popularising particular styles - we have Neneh Cherry with her dollar sign earrings, Marlene Dietrich, Roxanne Shante, Teena Marie, J-Lo and Ashanti. Many of these stars can be viewed again in a striking portrait-filled centrespread (I recognised Frida Kahlo and Sade - and there's an in-profile hair-scraped-back, bubblegum-blowing teen with big hoops through her lobes).
We see a crucifix; a couple of best friend pendant sets (the two of you wear half of a heart each, or one of two interlocking jigsaw pieces); a panther bangle; padlock bracelets; and - similar idea to the best friend pendant - a mum-and-daughter set.
Not only is Helping You Find The Right Jewellery, "the complete advice guide to getting clued up on how to wear the best teen jewellery", it's a fab and attractive document of the youth culture of a particular era - something over which to wax nostalgic in decades to come. I like how it works on two levels - both as a straightforward how-to and as something arty types will appreciate. One to go into the Women's Library 'zine archive for posterity.

Private View 25th November 7-30pm - 9-30pm - wine and mince pies for all!

The ever-popular exhibition of artists' multiples returns to Foldgallery this year, bigger, bolder and brasher than ever. 22 artists from across the UK, Europe and North America are featured in this selling exhibition of small, mass-produced work.

The centrepiece for this year's exhibition will be a giant installation of secondhand cupboards, draws and shelves. Visitors will be invited to open the cabinet to discover the treasures inside. It's a very hands-on experience that aims to make contemporary art that little bit less scary.

The works themselves are wide ranging in their styles, from fashion items made from old tape measures to delicate sculptural match books, limited edition artists books to model galleries to show off your own work. With prices ranging from £2 to £50, there's something for every pocket.

snowcase was started in 2001 as a way for artists to make a bit of extra pocket money for crimbo - they make a small work of art, make some more or churn them out by the dozen, and flog them really cheaply as stocking-fillers. Over the years fold has had nice cheap snowcases and a more expensive one for a bit of variety. To encourage people to engage with the exhibitions, and hopefully buy work, fold have been experimenting with the whole gallery experience. From little wooden boxes and metal cages, to vending machines, to try and make the show as interactive as possible.

A Night on Earth

One of my drawings is in the Night On Earth exhibition curated by Harry Pye. Which starts on the 3rd Nov...

Here is the info -

This exhibition features work from London based artists who miss aspects of their country of origin. Amongst the homesick artists who‚ve lent work for this show are Eilidh Crumlis (Scotland), Lara Murray (Australia) and Klarita Pandolfi (Italy). Also in this show are paintings from artists who've been inspired by their travels in Europe such as Caroline List (Austria), Mark Jones (Holland) and Catherine Story (France). Photographers who've lent work they took on their travels include; Martin Parr (America), Lucy Soutter (India), Steve Double (Cambodia) and Cian Quayle (Poland).

This exhibition also features travel stories. In an attempt to go around the world in 80 anecdotes, last year Harry Pye began asking friends, friends of friends and a few heroes to pen a 1,000 word story about an interesting evening they had when they were far away from home. Gay Rights campaigner Peter Tatchell has contributed a story about getting a hug and an apology from Iron Mike Tyson in Memphis. David Nobbs, who didn't get where he is today without creating Reggie Perrin, has written about enjoying a meal in Peru's most surreal hotel. Toby Young, author of "How To Lose Friends And Alienate People" has contributed a story about a disastrous best man speech he delivered in Washington. Other people who've written a story for this project include comedy writers/performers Morwenna Banks, Richard Herring and Stewart Lee, poets such as Paul Birtill and Atilla the Stockbroker and musicians including Chas Hodges, Ed Tenpole Tudor and Dave Gedge. Extracts from the stories will be displayed in easy to read poster form. Each story is being matched by a drawing donated by a different artist. Amongst those taking part are Sarah Doyle, Humphrey Ocean, Daisy de Villeneuve, Richard Wathen, Cathy Lomax and George Shaw.

The private view for Night on Earth is on November the 3rd from 7pm till 9pm at the Oh Art Gallery, Oxford House, Derbyshire Street, East London. 5 Minutes from Bethnal Green Tube, opposite Tesco Metro. To make this special event even more special (and to make up for the lack of free drinks)... Artists Jasper Joffe and Lucy Pawlak will be painting LIVE at the private view. Jasper will be making work about his travels in Africa and Lucy will be making a picture that conveys a sense of White Russia. The last week of the exhibition's run coincides with two related variety events that are taking place in the Oxford House theatre. On Thursday the 24th of November house band Los Pistoleros, with help from six guest singers including Bonzo Dog legend Neil Innes, will attempt to go around the world
in song. Also on the 24th there will be comedy from Richard Herring and music from London's greatest living lyricist Chris Difford & his acoustic chums. On Friday the 25th of November local band Arthur Brick, poetry from Paul Birtill, Gallon Drunk's James Johnson, and Terry Edwards & The Scapegoats. Tickets for these shows are a piffling £6 each and profits are being donated to War Child.
